E&W reflections are additional helps for your Sacred Story prayer journey. Reflect on them ahead of your prayer exercises for the week or outside of your fifteen-minute prayer windows during the week.
In spite of all we know about the human person, science cannot really answer the most basic questions of how life works. How does the mind work? What is DNA? Why/how do cells function the way they do? Why is loving, human physical contact necessary for a baby’s physical and mental development? How and why does the immaterial spirit (or mind) powerfully impact the material biochemical processes in our cells and vice versa? Just what is human nature, the name our tradition gives to the divinely created unity of body/spirit? How does human nature work?
We have a better understanding of life’s mechanics, but comprehending why life works the way it does is far beyond our capacities. The more we observe of the body and the mind’s workings, the more unbelievable life appears.1 We can’t even explain how a minute sequoia seed develops into the largest living thing on earth.
When you pray with Creation in Sacred Story, remember that your human life is a miracle that even the most brilliant scientific minds can’t explain. Let the awesomeness of this truth create wonder in your heart. Ponder its meaning. Give thanks.
Pray for each other. Pray for the Church.
Pray for the World at the Beginning of this New Year.
Forgive. Live in Gratitude.
Awaken to Creation, Presence, Memory, Mercy and Eternity.
When I see your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and stars that you set in place—
What is man that you are mindful of him,
and a son of man that you care for him?
Yet you have made him little less than a god,
crowned him with glory and honor.
You have given him rule over the works of your hands,
put all things at his feet.
(Psalm 8: 4-7)
