E & W reflections are additional helps for your Sacred Story prayer journey. Reflect on them at week’s beginning or outside of your 15-minute prayer periods.
There are just two ways to cope with my difficulties.
One leads to life, one to death. I will choose life.
The Lord’s labor of love to rescue and redeem humanity begins by calling a people and giving them the code of our true human nature. The code of the commandments is a gift to help them discern truth from falsehood in all their relationships. Once given the law, they are cautioned: I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live, by loving the LORD, your God, obeying his voice, and holding fast to him. For that will mean life for you, a long life for you to live on the land which the LORD swore to your ancestors, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give to them. (Dt 30: 19-20).
Life is difficult, as we have already reflected. But knowing the right path to choose in the face of life’s difficulties is often less complicated than we think. There may appear to be thousands of options, but in fact there are only two for each decision. We can choose life or death. We can choose love or retribution. We can choose forgiveness or hate. We can choose humility or pride. We can choose generosity or selfishness. We can choose to turn towards God or to turn away. We can choose hope or despair. We affirm that we have a choice in each and every decision. Let us always see the choices that lead to life and ask God for the grace to open to the light.
Lord Jesus, you have been our hope from one generation to the next. You never leave our side. Strengthen us to always reject choices that lead to death and choose instead those that lead to life, so that each decision in in my sacred story opens to
Creation, Presence, Memory, Mercy and Eternity.
The LORD has made his salvation known:
in the sight of the nations he has revealed his justice.
He has remembered his kindness and his faithfulness
toward the house of Israel.
(Psalm 98: 2-3)
