Mercy

In the last weeks we have pondered God’s love as MERCY and the Gospel mandate that we honestly identify our sinfulness and ask for His MERCY. This week we explore briefly how we who are forgiven by MERCY are called to offer MERCY to those who sin against us.

Original Sin unleashed an evil evolution in human history. Everyone has become unwitting victims of this evil. Yet to one degree or another, we all participate in it also. The most profound manifestation of God’s Love offered in Christ is the forgiveness of our sins. He invites and requires that we, who are forgiven, also offer that same MERCY and forgiveness to those who have sinned against us. We can’t withhold our MERCY because of injustice against us. We have been given a supreme example by Christ who forgave whose who betrayed, tortured and killed the Son of Justice. “Father forgive them, they know not what they do.” (Lk 23: 34)

Search your history for those people that you have withheld your MERCY from because of your justified anger. Realize that Christ has demolished all our arguments to hold on to anger for those who sinned against us by forgiving those who betrayed him (Scribes, Pharisees, disciples, torturers, and all sinners). Pray to be given the knowledge of where you are being called to offer MERCY for these persons who hurt you. Pray too for the grace to be able to offer it freely. God will hear your prayer if you ask for His help!

Lord Jesus, wake us up to those people whom we fail to offer your MERCY, due to our belief that we are justified in our ongoing anger. Help us to offer your MERCY to all so that we become your presence in the world and find in You our Creation, Presence, Memory, Mercy and Eternity.

Yours is princely power in the day of your birth, in holy splendor;
before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you.
The LORD has sworn, and he will not repent:
You are a priest forever, according to the order of Melchizedek.

(Psalm 110: 3-4)
